An online daily putting "Hooray!" in your day
We continue our Happy Hanukkah wishes on this 6th day of celebration! Hag sameach! May your days be bright!
"We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give." Thank you, Sir Winston Churchill. And hooray! for the wonderful folks who started this campaign to honor our heritage of giving in response to the corporate campaign for consumption.
I don't need to belabor the fruits of giving here because those of you who follow The Hooray Daily already have hearts of gold. Giving is quite likely your middle name. You know the benefits of a welcome, a kind word, a dollar to an outstretched hand, a check to a local charity, tithing to church, renewing your synagogue membership and volunteering for your favorite civic organization.
But did you know that during this holiday season of elephant-sized consumption (no disrespect, to my elephant friends), we will throw away more than half of what we purchased in December within the next 6 months? OMG! While I'm not a big consumer, that fact alone caused me to gasp for air when I discovered this yesterday! (Some actually put the landfill figure at over 95% of our purchases!)
That said, here's what I'm committed to this holiday season:
1) Give more to charity in honor of loved ones (Donations make FABulous gifts!),
2) Spend half of what I usually do for consumables, and
3) Find more organizations close to home for volunteering opportunities.
Do you know the favorite charities of your friends and family members? Find out now and forget the long lines at the mall. Pull out your wallet and make a gift to your peeps' favorite philanthropies! Everyone wins with such generosity. Here's to feeling great!
For giving, we recommend Crowdrise as a great starting place. Click the picture to find out why!
Here is what Crowdrise has to say about their philanthropy/fundraising efforts:
"CrowdRise is a unique blend of crowdfunding, social networking, contests, and other nice stuff...The CrowdRise community was named a “Top 25 Best Global Philanthropist” by Barron’s. We beat Oprah. And, Mashable named CrowdRise something like “the best place to raise money online for your favorite causes.” ..."
It's not how much we give, but
No one is useless in this world
who lightens the burdens of another.
-- Charles Dickens
Kid President: 20 Things We Should Say More Often
Get your corn dogs and BBQ sauce and listen up to Kid President. I just love the duo that creates these Kid President videos: Brad Montague and his little brother-in-law, Robby ("Kid President"). Robby is 9 years old. He's full of life and ideas. Robby has Osteogenesis Imperfect (OI), a brittle bone condition which has resulted in him having over 70 breaks since birth. What's inspiring about Robby isn't his condition, but the fact that his condition doesn't define who he is. In spite of all he's been through he not only keeps going -- he dances!
Here Are the Books On Our Bedside Table
What are you reading? Check out these wonderful titles. (By the way, some of these "on our bedside table" are actually on our Kindles and Nooks, and other reading devices! What a world we live in, huh? Simply amazing!)
You often say;
I would give, but only to the deserving,
The trees in your orchard say not so,
nor the flocks in your pasture.
Surely he who is worthy to receive his days and nights
is worthy of all else from you.
And he who has deserved to drink from the ocean of life
deserves to fill his cup from your little stream.
See first that you yourself deserve to be a giver,
and an instrument of giving.
For in truth it is life that gives unto life-while you,
who deem yourself a giver,
is but a witness.
-- Kahil Gibran, The Prophet
Kindness in words creates confidence.
Kindness in thinking creates profoundness.
Kindness in giving creates love.
-- Lao Tzu
No one has ever become poor by giving.
-- Anne Frank
There is a very real relationship,
both quantitatively and qualitatively,
between what you contribute and
what you get out of this world.
-- Oscar Hammerstein, II
