The birthday celebration is a relatively modern idea, and only came into regular practice when calendars were made popular and common. The celebrations began as a pagan tradition to ward off evil spirits that lurked during days of change, like those when turning a year older. Well-wishers and noisy celebrants kept the unlucky forces at bay, not only for the person on their birthday, but for the revelers themselves. Hmmmm, makes me want to celebrate all my Facebook friends as it seems that every day I open my FB page, there are at least 2 or 3 birthdays on my calendar! I didn't know about this good omen for the well-wishers. I think I'll send out a bit more love and merriment.
Birthdays of friends, family, co-workers and neighbors are a good reminder of what is wonderful in life. We have so much for which to be grateful, particularly the connections and relations we have. In fact, the one standing there about ready to spit all over the cake (I mean blow out the candles, forgive me) is enough reason to shout, "Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU!"
I hope that you have someone special to celebrate on this day or this week. If not, there are 4 billion people on the planet, and likely to be around 11 million people with birthdays today--so send out a big wish to those 11 million. Be a reveler and enjoy the celebration. Your birthday will be soon and we'll celebrate you too!
