A fever of comparison brings on the chills. I set personal goals based on what other people have achieved. I lower the bar because I have seen what others have been able to accomplish with their (allegedly, superior) connections, resources, talent, money and degrees. I create a bar for myself based on what I believe others can do or what others might expect of me. And those goals that I do set based on my own wild imagination (hope and expectations) are kept exceedingly close to my chest. These are not for anyone else's eyes or for public consumption (literally). I don't like to set up opportunities for others to think, "poor girl, she's deluded...she's always been such a dreamer (so sad she's setting herself up for failure...)"
"Comparison fever" is a malady that we all share. Just look at Madison Avenue, Wall Street and Rodeo Drive...We have standards of intelligence, beauty, talent and financial success before us every day from every possible information outlet.
Because of these in-your-face comparisons, It takes a strong sense of self to resist the culture-at-large and to consult one's inner wisdom. There is no one in the world like you or me. No one!! We are unique, beautiful, smart, gifted and determined. We are loving, kind-hearted, generous, influential and funny. We are strong, clever, powerful, ingenious and resourceful.
We have everything we need inside of us to make our lists of resolutions and dreams without the comparisons that leave us feverish and soul-sick. More importantly, we have what it takes to succeed. So write your lists with me over the next few days. We'll head into 2014 with our resolutions and our dreams--not anyone else's. We won't allow comparison fever to take a stranglehold of our dreams and resolutions for a better tomorrow. The Hooray Daily will be a place/space for finding our "giddyup" when we need it. And hey, we all need cheerleaders and supporters on the journey. Right?
I'm off to get my pen!
